Our Mission and Vision

The mission of the University of Rochester Gynecologic Oncology fellowship program is to train physicians who provide exceptional care and support for patients and their families affected by gynecologic cancers and other medical conditions. Our goal is to provide fellows with the tools necessary to become board certified in Gynecologic Oncology through a safe learning environment where our multidisciplinary team-based care is of the highest order and prioritizes education, research and professional growth as our most valued priorities.

The aim of the program is to provide fellows with a robust and diverse training experience that focuses on all aspects of caring for patients and families affected by gynecologic malignancies including surgical, medical and supportive/end-of-life care. Additionally, our goal will be to develop skilled and efficient oncologic surgeons that will be adept at managing complex gynecologic cases that are often referred to our specialty for management. Fellows will be trained and mentored to develop and uphold the highest degree of ethical standards, practice evidence-based medicine, to continually evaluate their outcomes to strive to improve and evolve and demonstrate excellent clinical judgement. Fellows will participate in basic science and clinical research to gain an understanding of developments in our field and become capable of critically reviewing scientific and medical literature and understanding the importance of making continued contributions to the advancements of care for patients with gynecologic cancers. We focus not only on the p-values but also on the h-values (human values) and treat all patients with dignity, respect and compassion. As a core principle of taking care of our patients we always ask two questions; what would you want done for your loved one? And can we do more? Through the values taught and held in our program, fellows will become leaders in their field and communities and will shape the future of gynecologic oncology care through becoming mentors, educators and physician scientists.

What Our Fellows Say...

Naixin Zhang

"I chose this program because of the faculty and mentorship. My favorite parts have been the perfect balance of education, service, and wellness. We have high surgical volume but with how much ancillary staff support we receive, I never feel bogged down by "nonphysician tasks." Everything I do I feel is valuable for my education. I especially like the robotics training I’ve received, and I feel very comfortable doing difficult cases minimally invasively. I think URMC is a great fit for me because of the people and culture. Everyone goes the extra step to make life easier for everyone else. Everyone is always seeking to improve and maintain excellence in patient care."
