How to Apply

Applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Applicants are required to provide a narrative personal statement, the Medical Student’s Performance Evaluation (MSPE) provided by your medical school, USMLE scores, ABSITE scores and three or four letters of recommendation. These letters should come from faculty members who know the candidate well and can speak to their character and qualifications.  We encourage letters from cardiothoracic and general surgery faculty. One letter should come from a senior surgical faculty member such as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Chief or Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery or the Program Director in Surgery or Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Applications are due end of December and completed applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty members. Invitations for interviews are sent to applicants in late January. Interviews will be held in person in February – March.

The fellowship program selects the most qualified candidates regardless of their age, sex, race, creed, sexual orientation, national origin, or handicap. The selection process focuses on information supplied in the application package (application form, personal statement, Dean's Letter, scholastic accomplishments, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, ABSITE scores) and personal interviews.

Interview Information

We have returned to in-person interviews for the program. The interview day begins at 7 a.m. with Grand Rounds, followed by a program overview presented by the program director and five to six faculty interviews.

Applicants selected to interview are also invited to an informal gathering the evening before interview day with current faculty and trainees. Attendance is optional.

Applicants invited to interview for the Thoracic Traditional Fellowship program are likewise welcome to attend an informal gathering the night before their interview, offering an opportunity to meet faculty and current residents. Participation is optional.

Interviews for this program will be held via Zoom in early February. A reception will take place the evening prior. The interview day begins at 8 a.m. with a light breakfast, followed by five faculty interviews, lunch with residents, and a tour of Strong Memorial Hospital. The day concludes around 2 p.m. Hard copies of the sample contract and stipend information will be provided to applicants on interview day.

The residency program selects the most qualified candidates without regard to age, sex, race, creed, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. Selection is based on the application materials, including the application form, personal statement, Dean’s letter, academic achievements, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, and performance during the personal interview.
