How to Apply

  • Applicants are required to provide a narrative personal statement and three letters of reference in addition to the Dean's letter. These letters should come from full-time faculty members who know the candidate well and can speak to his or her character and qualifications.  We encourage letters from cardiothoracic or general surgery faculty. One letter must come from the chairman of the Department of Surgery or the Cardiothoracic Surgery Program Director.
  • Completed applications are reviewed by the faculty committee.  Invitations for interviews are sent via email on second week of January.  The residency selection committee reviews the individual evaluations following interviews and develops the Ranking List, which is submitted to the National Residency Matching Program.
  • Applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
  • The deadline for applications is January 31st, 2022. Only completed applications with be reviewed. Interview is by invitation only and will be communicated to the applicant via email.

Interview Information

Applicants invited to interview for the Thoracic Traditional Fellowship program also are invited to attend an informal gathering the night before interview day with faculty and residents currently in the program. Participation is optional.

Applicants will be invited for interview early February via zoom. A reception takes place the night before. The day begins at 8AM with a light breakfast followed by 5 interviews with faculty, lunch with the residents, and a walk through Strong Memorial Hospital. The day ends around 2PM. Hard copies of sample contract and stipend amounts will be given to the applicant on the interview day.

The residency program selects the best qualified candidates regardless of their age, sex, race, creed, sexual orientation, national origin or handicap. The selection process focuses on information supplied in the application package: application form, personal statement, Dean's letter, scholastic accomplishments, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores and a personal interview.

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) does not contract with any single hotel to offer discounted rates. We have found that applicants have specific hotel preferences and can often find better rates through online services.
