Leadership & Management for Scientists is a 1-credit course focused on human-centered strategies for leading effective teams in biomedical and health science academic environments. These skills are also transferable to research-related careers.

Through interactive activities, reflective writing, self-assessments, and group discussions, participants develop practical techniques for addressing issues that commonly arise within and between research groups.

The course promotes awareness of individual leadership styles and offers new approaches to explore. Leadership styles are not judged as “good” or “bad”; instead, the course provides a structured, nonjudgmental environment to help participants discover what works best for them.

This highly experiential, discovery-based program emphasizes dialogue and shared learning. Participants engage with a variety of presenters and learning formats including short lectures, videos, case examples, and group work.

Testimonials from Past Learners in the Course

"Leadership and Management for Scientists is a crucial class offering valuable tools and knowledge beyond research in science. Every graduate student should consider taking it to develop essential skills such as negotiating, managing people, effective communication, resource management, budgeting, and time management. The course helps identify and leverage individual strengths for goal achievement. Personally, I found the session on understanding and utilizing personal strengths particularly beneficial, and I continue to apply these skills daily. As a 4th-year PhD candidate, I've employed the learned skills in planning my professional future, including conducting informational interviews for insights into my desired career path. I highly recommend this class to all students, with special emphasis for first-generation students like me."
