APRIL 2025: My Youth Preparedness Initiative (MyPi)

DESCRIPTION:
Beginning in 2023, Cornell Cooperative Extension has offered a four-time national award-winning youth preparedness, leadership and educational outreach program known as MyPI (My Preparedness Initiative) for teenagers across New York. MyPI New York is a component of the National Youth Preparedness Initiative (MyPI National), a partnership of 37 states and 3 US territories, delivering an innovative, engaging, and comprehensive curriculum for teenagers that will enable profound impact on emergency preparedness for households and communities in addition to youth leadership characteristics across the nation. The Phase 1 pilot, Phase 2 expansion, Phase 3 expansion, and final Phase 4 expansion of MyPI National has been funded by the National Institute for Food and Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health.
OBJECTIVES:
- Build Life Saving Skill Sets and Be Certified in CPR and AED Usage.
- Learn about Emergency Management and First Responder Careers.
- Identify Hazards and Become Extreme Weather Aware.
- Give Back to Your Communities through the PREP + 6 Service Project.
- Develop Emergency Kits and Family Communication Plans.
- Learn about Technology in Emergency Preparedness, including NOAA Weather Radios, Social and Smartphone Apps, HAM Radio, etc.

JUNE 2025:  Information Security Team Training Idea - A Phishing Escape Room

During National Cyber Security Awareness Month in October 2024, the University of Rochester's Information Security Team launched a variety of engaging activities and opportunities for faculty, staff and students to learn more about information security. One highlight was an interactive Phishing Escape Room exercise. Learn more about URMC InfoSec's outside the box training idea and how participants gained valuable insights into how phishing attacks work while learning practical tips to protect themselves and the organization from threats.

JULY 2024:  Strike Planning – Site Preparedness & Strategies for Success

DESCRIPTION: This session will review hospital preparations and best practices for pending union/labor actions.  The course provides guidance to hospital leadership, mid-level management and others on developing a needs assessment, organizational structure and 10-day plan prior to strike date.
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
- Effectively oversee strike preparations at their site(s)
- Create a 10-day strike countdown plan incorporating the following areas: Staffing & Training, Site Security, Site Operations, Site Logistics, Regulatory Requirements, Leadership Command & Control, Communications, Documentation Requirements

SEPTEMBER 2024: National Special Pathogen System of Care Resources for New York State

OCTOBER 2024: Preparing Oneself to Lead to Community Resiliency

DESCRIPTION: Unfortunately it is not too early to talk about blizzards or ice storms as 17 years ago in early October the Buffalo region got hit by a surprise ice storm and the weather emergencies continued up through today. With at least 5 tornadoes in Western New York and a community with many vulnerabilities inclusive of aging infrastructure  the question is—what do you need to go three days without water or power or groceries and what are the self-care skills you need to be physically and mentally strong over that time?  Sarah comes prepared to discuss how to prepare oneself to lead to community resiliency.

NOVEMBER 2024: MCI After Action

On September 21, 2023, a charter bus transporting 40 high school students and 4 adults careened off a NY highway and down an embankment resulting in an MCI.  Victims were transported to 6 area hospitals including Garnet Health Medical Center in Wallkill, NY.  J. FEBRUARY 2025: Pediatric Considerations in Disaster Planning

This presentation will focus on pediatric considerations in disaster planning to include the unique anatomical, physiological and developmental differences in children that make them a vulnerable population.  Principles of pediatric mass casualty triage using the SALT triage algorithm and pediatric decontamination considerations and best practices will be reviewed as well as recommendations for essential pediatric-specific resources, supplies and equipment to provide initial clinical care during disasters.
