Tenure-Track Faculty Positions

The Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health Sciences (EMPHS) at the University of Rochester School of Medicine invites applications to fill three tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. We seek candidates with a passion for research on how environmental, health systems, or societal factors shape human health and influence disease across the lifespan. Research can be related to one or more of the three broad areas of the Department: Environmental Health & Toxicology, Population Health, and Health Systems and Policy. All applicants must hold a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, ScD or equivalent).

  • Mechanistic Toxicology: Applicants conducting hypothesis-driven investigation of toxicity mechanisms at the molecular to systems level in the areas of developmental origins of health and disease, immunology, reproductive or lung biology and/or neurodevelopment are strongly encouraged to apply. Toxicological approaches to cancer and aging related disease research are also welcome. Applicants must have a record of contribution to the scientific literature using state-of-the-art approaches and methodologies.
  • Epidemiology: All applicants must have a doctoral degree in Epidemiology or a closely related field, and have a strong emphasis on research design, epidemiological methods, and data/statistical analysis in their research. Applicants with interest in environmental exposures, aging, cancer, or neuroepidemiology are particularly encouraged to apply, although we will consider applicants with all areas of research focus.
  • Health Systems and Policy: All applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Health Services, Health Economics, Health Policy, Health Informatics, Implementation Science or in a closely related field with a strong emphasis on research design and methods, and with expertise in health policy, payment reforms, outcomes assessment, learning health systems, and/or cost-effectiveness analysis.

Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to pose and answer novel research questions, communicate complex concepts effectively, develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program, and have a strong record of peer-reviewed publications. Candidates will also be expected to participate in the teaching and service missions of the Department and affiliated programs, and contribute to collaborations and leading-edge research across disciplinary boundaries. Successful candidates are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring and participate in departmental and affiliated education programs. 

EMPHS includes 42 primary faculty whose expertise and interests span toxicology, environmental and public health sciences that transform discoveries into clinical practice, policy, and community-level change. The EMPHS Department administers several interdisciplinary research programs, including the Environmental Health Sciences Center, Institute for Human Health and the Environment, Lake Ontario Microplastics Center, Center for Inhalation and Flavoring Toxicology Research, and the Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program. Faculty also lead programs in qualitative and mixed methods, dissemination and implementation, and community engagement related to improving health and health care delivery. The Department is home to graduate and postgraduate education programs, including a Preventive Medicine Residency, PhD programs in Toxicology, Epidemiology, and Health Services Research, as well as a Master in Public Health and Masters in Clinical Investigation, Epidemiology, and Health Services Research programs, and five Advanced Certificate programs.

The Department environment is collaborative and welcomes different perspectives and encourages innovation. In addition to research and education, faculty lead numerous community-based clinical and non-clinical programs including the Aging Institute, Wilmot Cancer Institute, Del Monte Neuroscience Institute, Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Center for Community Health & Prevention.
