Emergency Drill May 1

Emergency Drill May 1

Highland Hospital is hosting an active shooter drill on May 1 from 8 a.m. to noon. Multiple local law enforcement and emergency response agencies will be participating including the Rochester Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Police Department, Rochester Fire Department, AMR, Pittsford Ambulance, and the Monroe County Office of Emergency Management.

The drill will simulate how the hospital and local law enforcement agencies would respond to an active shooter situation in the hospital’s new patient tower, which is scheduled to open this summer. Because construction on the tower is nearly complete, but it is not yet occupied with staff and patients, it will give the hospital and community partners the unique opportunity to practice how they would respond if this situation were ever to occur. The safety of its providers, staff, patients and their families, and the community is Highland’s top priority and practice is crucial when it comes to safety and emergency preparedness.

Dozens of emergency response vehicles will be parked in the front bus loop of School 12 during the drill and a few might park in other spots nearby during this drill. The Rochester Police Department will also be sending out a text alert to the neighborhood to remind everyone that a drill is taking place. Highland recognizes this could cause some inconvenience for residents. However, emergency preparedness is crucial for the long term safety and security of the hospital and the surrounding neighborhood. We appreciate your patience and support during this time.

Saturday Work 4/22

Crews will be onsite Saturday, 4/22 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flooring, electrical, and mechanical crews will be working on various projects inside the building. Outside, crews will be installing fiber cement panels and working on roofing depending on the weather.

During the week, crews will be using the swing stage scaffolding and boom lifts to install roofing and the cement panels on the sides of the building. Site work is also being done in preparation for installing the storm sewer and foundations. Fill is being brought in that will be used to bring the site up to grade. Exhaust and strobic fans will also be starting up next week.

Crews are anticipating bringing the site work up to grade fully by mid-May to allow for settlement since we cannot utilize vibratory compaction. This will generate minimal vibrations due to bulldozer movement, static roller and dump truck tailgates closing. Vibration monitoring is in place and all vibrations to date have been within what is considered to be normal range.
