CT/CAT Scan (Computed Tomography)

What is a Computed Tomography (CT/CAT) Scan?
A Computed Tomography (CT) scan, also called a CAT scan, is a fast, detailed imaging test that helps doctors see inside your body. It uses X-rays and advanced computer technology to create clear cross-sectional images (or "slices") that allow doctors to view organs, bones, and blood vessels in greater detail.
CT scans are commonly used to diagnose injuries, detect disease, and guide treatment decisions. Many exams take less than 30 minutes and are performed on an outpatient basis. They are frequently used in emergency and time-sensitive situations because they are fast and highly accurate.
CT scans can show:
- Injuries and bone fractures
- Internal bleeding
- Organ damage
- Tumors or abnormal growths
UR Medicine uses low-dose CT scanners, which significantly decrease the level of radiation exposure to the patient while maintaining high image quality.
How Long Does a CT Scan Take?
A CT scan can take 10-30 minutes, depending on the type of scan.
What is the Difference Between a CT Scan and an MRI?
A CT scan uses X-rays to produce images of any part of the body, while an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a strong magnetic field and radiowaves. An MRI takes longer than a CT scan, and it may be used when a CT scan cannot detect the patient's condition.
