Spring Semester, 4 Cr.
Course Instructor
Course Description: This course provides analyses of the physical bases for the use of high-frequency sound in medicine (diagnosis, therapy and surgery) and biology. Topics include acoustic properties of tissues, sound propagation (linear and nonlinear) in tissues, interactions of ultrasound with gas bodies (acoustic cavitation and contrast agents), thermal and non-thermal biological effects of ultrasound, ultrasonography, dosimetry, and lithotripsy.
BME 593 - Laboratory Rotations in BME
Spring and Fall Semesters, 2 Cr.
Course Description: This course provides BME doctoral students with an introduction to research areas and faculty laboratories in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. At the start of the academic year, students attend seminars to meet BME faculty and learn of the diversity of research opportunities within the department. Throughout the first year, students complete three laboratory rotations in three different BME faculty labs, and meet regularly as a class. At the conclusion of each laboratory rotation, students must prepare a written report or deliver an oral presentation on the project they conducted in the lab.
