Capacity Evaluation Clinic

UR Medicine Memory Care launched the Capacity Clinic to provide psychiatric assessments that determine whether a person currently has the ability to make certain types of decisions.

These evaluations help clarify whether someone has the decision-making capacity required for specific legal, financial, or medical matters.

Types of Decisions We Assess

  • Making a will
  • Assigning a power of attorney
  • Assigning a health care proxy
  • Financial decision-making
  • Health care decision-making
  • Guardianship

How the Assessment Works

The evaluation provides a medical opinion about a person’s decision-making capacity in specific areas at the time of the exam.

It is important to note that:

  • The assessment does not determine legal incompetence.
  • Legal incompetence can only be determined by a court of law.

During the evaluation, the clinician will assess the individual and provide a professional medical opinion regarding the capacity question being asked.

The report may also include clinical impressions and treatment recommendations when appropriate.

After the Evaluation

The Capacity Clinic operates as a consultation service.

This means:

  • The clinic does not provide ongoing care or prescribe medications.
  • The evaluation results are sent to the referring provider

The referring provider will then determine any appropriate next steps.
