About the Deaf2 Project
What is the Deaf2 Project?
The aims of this pilot project (2017-2019) were to develop, implement, and evaluate a program to connect NYS Deaf sign language users seeking HIV testing with language-concordant test counseling and results. Secondary aims were to raise awareness with NYS Deaf communities regarding accessible HIV information, testing, and care, and to collaboratively identify key data elements needed for HIV-related surveillance within NYS Deaf communities. The Deaf2 HIV Video Call Center used HIPAA-compliant videoconference software to connect trained counselors who are Deaf with Deaf clients at participating HIV testing sites in NYS. These video calls made possible confidential, individualized direct counseling in American Sign Language (ASL) regarding HIV testing and risk. This first of its kind, the Deaf2 Project supported NYS plan to End the AIDS Epidemic (ETE), primarily by identifying Deaf individuals with HIV, informing them of their status, and providing risk reduction counseling and information to link them with accessible healthcare and support services. This was a collaborative pilot project of the University of Rochester (UR) NCDHR, UR Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), community partners, and other stakeholders.

About the Logo
The Deaf2 HIV Video Testing Line logo was designed by former staff member, Erika de la Puente. The logo itself is based on the American Sign Language (ASL) sign for "Video Phone." Deaf people heavily rely on VideoPhone (VP) or face-to-face calls. The color red was used to represent universal awareness and support people living with HIV/AIDS.
