Pathology Residency Program
Pathology Residency Program
The University of Rochester Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine trains exceptional residents for practice in the rapidly evolving field of Pathology.
Residents are integral physician-members of our team, which is dedicated to serving a diverse patient population throughout western New York in an expanding regional healthcare model.
Residents are provided great breadth and depth of exposure to all fields in Pathology. With an Anatomic Pathology subspecialty model, strong Clinical Pathology training and diverse elective opportunities, residents can personalize their educational experience to prepare them for any future subspecialty or practice setting.
Residents participate in active research programs and projects to improve standards of practice, with the goal of developing pathologists who will drive the future of innovation in pathology.
The motto of the University is "Meliora", meaning "ever better." The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine trains residents to become the pathologists of the future that will continuously aim to be ever better.

How does mentorship shape you as a scientist and as a person?
In this episode of Learners on Location, Assistant Professor Calvin Cole, PhD, and fifth-year PhD student Zach Sechrist share how mentorship at the University of Rochester goes beyond the lab. From studying cancer cachexia (muscle wasting in cancer patients) to building habits around fitness, mental health, and personal growth, their relationship highlights how taking care of yourself can lead to stronger research and greater impact.
What Sets Us Apart
Our residents most commonly reference the personal relationships and valuable mentoring they receive as one of the top reasons why they would recommend URMC.
What our residents say...
"Our residency is a place where hard work and kindness meet. The training is rigorous, but the support is constant. We look out for each other, laugh with each other, and carry one another through the long days. Faculty are present and approachable, not only guiding us as physicians but reminding us that our well-being matters just as much as our education. What grows here is more than skill β itβs community. A sense of belonging that makes the challenges lighter, and the victories brighter."
