While growing up in Richmond, Indiana, where he graduated from high school, his family often made trips back to the Twin Cities to visit family. He then attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he majored in biology and mathematics and played soccer. After graduating, he then returned to Indiana, where he subsequently completed a master's degree in biology at Purdue University and his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He moved to Rochester, New York in 2004 to pursue his residency training in neurology. Shortly after completing his training and joining the faculty, he was introduced to his wife by a mutual friend.
