Professional Background

Jack G. Caton, D.D.S., M.S. began teaching at Eastman Dental Center following graduation in 1973 and became Program Director of the Division of Periodontology in 1990. He is in private practice with fellow alumni Drs. Paul Romano and Timothy Blieden.

Dr. Caton received his DDS from the University of California, San Francisco in 1967 and a US Army certificate in Advanced General Dentistry in 1968. He completed his residency in periodontology from Eastman Dental Center in 1973 and also received his MS in dental science from the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

He has received numerous awards and honors including the William J. Gies Award in Periodontology and the Gold Medal for contributions to the specialty of Periodontics from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). In 2008 he received the prestigious Norton M. Ross Award for excellence in clinical research from the American Dental Association. He was recognized in 2009 as the Outstanding Periodontal Educator by the AAP. Dr. Caton has served his profession as Commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and Director and Chairman of the American Board of Periodontology. He is past president of the AAP and the AAP Foundation.

He has conducted research in periodontal wound healing, animal models, diagnosis, and human clinical trials. He has published over 110 scientific articles and book chapters.
