3rd Annual PM&R Research Day

We are pleased to celebrate the success of our annual PM&R Research Day, held on June 11, 2026, in the Mary Ellen Burris Auditorium. The event brought together a diverse group of faculty, staff, and collaborators from across departments to showcase research, foster collaboration, and celebrate innovation. It was a wonderful way to close out the fiscal year and begin FY27 with continued enthusiasm and commitment to advancing research.

URochester Medicine Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Welcomes Oliver Masaba, M.D., October 2026

URochester Medicine is pleased to welcome Dr. Oliver Masaba to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Masaba is an occupational medicine physiatrist with extensive experience in the management of work-related injuries.

Dr. Masaba earned his Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. He completed a general surgery internship at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, followed by a preliminary internal medicine internship at Abington Memorial Hospital. He then completed residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Since 2016, Dr. Masaba has practiced with New York Physical Medicine Center, LLC, in Rochester, where he provides outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation care focused on workers’ compensation and motor vehicle accident populations. He also performs electrodiagnostic studies and interventional procedures and conducts functional restoration, return-to-work, and impairment evaluations. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has hospital privileges at FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. Dr. Masaba has also contributed to scholarly activity in physical medicine and rehabilitation, including a 2014 AAPMR poster on exercise therapy in MELAS.

URochester Medicine Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Welcomes Andrew Stephens, M.D., September 2026

URochester Medicine is pleased to welcome Dr. Andrew Stephens to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. His clinical focus is on diagnosing and treating spine and musculoskeletal conditions. He has expertise in interventional spine (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar) procedures with the goal of restoring function and improving the quality of life of his patients. Common conditions he treats include disc herniations, spinal stenosis, and degenerative spine changes.

After completing his undergraduate studies at BYU-Idaho in biochemistry, he earned his medical degree at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, UT. He then completed residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. Prior to returning to Rochester he completed an interventional spine fellowship at Stanford University.

Dr. Stephens has been an active researcher throughout his medical training and clinical practice with 60+ peer reviewed publications. His work focuses on enhancing the quality of spine and musculoskeletal care, improving patient selection for interventional procedures, and understanding the patient's perspective of their care. He is also passionate about medical education and working with trainees.

URochester Medicine is pleased to welcome Dr. Antonis Costeas to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a board-eligible physiatrist who specializes in Cancer Rehabilitation. He completed his residency in Physical medicine and rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids and subsequently completed a Cancer Rehabilitation fellowship at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor Michigan.

Dr. Costeas's clinical focus will be cancer rehabilitation, treating patients with functional and musculoskeletal impairments from solid and liquid malignancies such as breast, head and neck cancers, melanoma, multiple myeloma, primary and metastatic brain tumors etc. He has experience in treating post-mastectomy pain and shoulder pain, acquired cervical dystonia from surgery and radiation, trismus, sialorrhea, radiation fibrosis, peripheral neuropathy, metastatic disease to the spine. He is able to perform ultrasound guided procedures using botulinum toxin (trismus, sialorrhea, cervical dystonia), nerve blocks (serratus plane, intercostobrachial nerve blocks) and corticosteroid injections. He is interested in advancing cancer rehabilitation research and inspiring medical trainees to consider cancer rehabilitation as a career.

URochester Medicine Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Welcomes Lyla Wadia, Psy.D., August 2026

URochester Medicine is pleased to welcome Dr. Lyla Wadia to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She is a board-eligible clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in conducting comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations to assess individuals' cognitive and psychosocial functioning. Dr. Wadia earned her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Loyola University Maryland. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, and subsequently a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at Yale School of Medicine in Connecticut.

Dr. Wadia's clinical focus will be in concussion, acquired brain injury, stroke, cardiac arrest, and comorbid psychiatric and medical conditions. In addition to outpatient assessment, she hopes to develop a concussion education program and to work with individuals and their loved ones in navigating the challenges of adjusting to injuries requiring long-term rehabilitation. She is also passionate about clinical supervision and the mentorship of trainees.

URochester Medicine Physical Medicine & Rehabiltiaion Welcomes Alexandar Martin, M.D., M.Sc., August 2026

University of Rochester Medicine is pleased to welcome Dr. Alexander Martin to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Martin earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, VA. He then completed his transitional year internship training with the Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville, NC prior to completion of his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, IL.

Dr. Martin’s practice at URochester Medicine will have a clinical focus in electrodiagnostic medicine, the evaluation of peripheral nerve and muscle disorders through electromyography (EMG) and nerve conductions studies. He will also be caring for patients with conditions affecting the hips, knees, and shoulders with an additional focus in nonoperative musculoskeletal medicine, particularly arthritis management. His goal is to help patients maximize function and achieve their individual health goals through compassionate, evidence-based care. In electrodiagnostic medicine, he is dedicated to delivering accurate diagnostic information while ensuring patients feel informed, comfortable, and supported throughout the testing process.

Dr. Sarah Salim We are proud to celebrate Dr. Sara Salim for being named the 2026 recipient of the Subspecialty Excellence Award in Geriatrics presented by the Division of Geriatrics & Aging at the University of Rochester.

This recognition honors Dr. Salim’s outstanding dedication, collaboration, and commitment to the care of older adults.

Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement and thank you for your continued excellence in supporting geriatric care.
