Clinical Responsibilities

Clinic/Pre-Operative Evaluation

The transplant fellow will be expected to evaluate patients for transplantation and vascular access surgeries. They will be assigned to a transplant clinic for 2 half days a week, covering both liver and kidney transplant patients. Transplant evaluations involve detailed H&P, education on the surgical risks of transplant, donor types and long-term outcomes.

Inpatient

The fellow will conduct rounds on the transplant inpatient service including patients in the Emergency Department and Surgical ICU. This includes review of vitals, performing history/examination, reviewing past labs, cultures, immunosuppression, and radiology. They will verify the patient’s orders and write a preliminary note before rounding with the attending on service. The fellow is expected to be involved with the daily clinical decision-making, immunosuppression management and discharge planning in conjunction with the multidisciplinary transplant team including Transplant hepatology, Transplant nephrology, Transplant Infectious disease and Surgical ICU attending teams. The transplant service is a surgical service and the fellow would be the most senior surgical trainee with supervision responsibilities over the surgical residents rotating on the service.

Operative

Donor Surgeries

The fellow will be expected to participate in as many deceased and living donor organ procurements during their training period as needed to meet ASTS training requirements.

Recipient Surgeries

Liver

The fellow is expected to be involved with all liver transplant procedures, depending on their availability. Operative strategy and technique will be emphasized and it is expected that the fellow will be playing a primary role in their second year of fellowship.

Kidneys

The fellow would be expected to perform kidney transplants with the senior staff surgeon from the outset. It is expected that the fellow will perform transplants in a primary role during their first year of fellowship.
