Memory Care Program

Overview

The Memory Care Program provides diagnosis, treatment, and care of neurodegenerative conditions that affect the elderly and the aging nervous system.

Our program specializes in treating older patients with:

  • Memory loss
  • Dementia
  • Cognitive dysfunction
  • Alzheimer’s disease

What to Expect from the Memory Care Program

We offer a specialty service that focuses on patients with memory problems due to dementia and/or probable Alzheimer's. We evaluate the patient and make recommendations to their primary care physician. Family members are encouraged to attend the initial visit, as this is a good time to ask questions and to provide input.

At the initial appointment, patients will be seen by a physician or nurse practitioner specializing in memory evaluation and will undergo a thorough review of medical history and symptoms. Laboratory tests and special studies may be ordered, which may include brain imaging or neuropsychological testing. The medical team will explain the diagnosis to the patient and suggest ways for the family to deal with any difficulties that have been identified. The clinic will send a report of the examination results to the patient’s primary care doctor and a family member, if desired.

Our program provides our patients with:

  • Assessment, evaluation, and diagnostic workup
  • Ongoing medication management and help with challenging behaviors
  • Recommendations for treatment
  • Information, education, and support for their care partners
  • Referrals for community resources
  • Opportunities to participate in research studies

Leqembi (lecanemab)

Leqembi (lecanemab) was granted full FDA approval for the treatment of mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease and mild Alzheimer’s disease dementia on July 6, 2023. While this is an exciting step forward in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, this medication may not be appropriate for everyone with these diagnoses. If you are interested in finding out if Leqembi (lecanemab) is appropriate for you or your family member, we encourage you to speak with your current Memory Care provider. If you are not a patient at the Memory Care Program, we recommend you speak with your primary care provider to see if a referral to the Memory Care Program is appropriate.

What Sets Us Apart?

The UR Medicine memory care program offers unique, innovative, and multidisciplinary memory care to our patients. Our team of experts includes neurologists, geriatric psychiatrists, a geriatrician, a neuropsychologist, a family and marriage therapist, and social workers.

Together, these clinicians help patients and their families deal with the many dimensions of the disease and phases of treatment, beginning with an early and accurate diagnosis. The team meets regularly, provides follow-up and supportive care, and offers access to clinical trials as appropriate.

Important research studies are being conducted at UR Medicine. These studies include new treatments for people with memory problems, dementia prevention, and observational research opportunities.
