What are Group Therapy Services?
UR Medicine Mental Health and Wellness Group Therapy Services, for people ages 18 and older, provide sessions with a small number of people (usually eight). Groups meet weekly under the guidance of a professionally trained group therapist.
Group therapy can help people learn about themselves, improve their relationships, and develop better coping and symptom management skills. It addresses feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety and can help with addictive disorders, problems with children, trauma, dealing with the aging process, and grief/loss.
Note: Group Therapy is offered at multiple service locations, but please call (585) 276-4102 to learn about current groups.
UR Medicine's Approach
Prior to starting group therapy, the group members each meet individually with the group therapist, who provides information about the group and what to expect.

What Sets Us Apart?
When compared to individual therapy, group therapy has been shown to be as effective and—for some problems—more effective. In cases of medical illness, substantial evidence shows that this form of therapy helps people cope better with symptoms and enhances the quality of their lives.
Since its inception in 1945, our Department of Psychiatry – one of the first of its kind – has remained at the forefront of psychiatric medicine and care.
As part of UR Medicine, a world-class medical center and leading academic institution, our Department has also remained true to our mission of delivering outstanding patient-centered care, conducting breakthrough research and training the next generation of psychiatric clinicians, researchers and teachers. In fact, we were the birthplace of the biopsychosocial model of health and illness that serves as the cornerstone of education and training of students and trainees across the field of psychiatry.
