UR Medicine's Approach

Strong Minds is home to a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, registered nurses, clinical therapists, and clinical assistants. Our team conducts thorough assessments and provide an array of treatments, including:

Group Therapy Services

Through group therapy, patients learn how to cope and improve their relationships. Groups meet weekly for one to two hours, depending on the specific group. Prior to starting group therapy, the group members each meet individually with the group therapist, who provides information about the group and what to expect.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Anxiety Management Group assists participants in developing mindfulness of their internal thoughts and feelings. This group is best for individuals who experience a disruptive level of anxiety or worry.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Group helps individuals with unstable relationships, emotional instability, and impulsive behaviors.
  • Depression Management Group is a short-term group that helps break the cycle of inactivity and depression through increasing self-awareness and the utilization of coping skills.

For more information on the types of groups available and meeting times, please contact the Group Therapy Service at (585) 276-4102.

Outpatient Psychiatric Consultation Service

The UR Medicine Strong Minds Adult Outpatient Services offers outpatient psychiatric consultations to primary care providers and current prescribing providers to help them manage the use of medications used to treat mental health disorders in adult patients. Referring providers must be willing to continue to prescribe medications and obtain collateral information for the patient for whom the consultation is requested to utilize this service, as consulting psychiatrists through this program do not prescribe medications or offer medication management services.

Providers are encouraged to refer patients with mood disorders, which is a primary focus of the clinic. Psychological testing and diagnostic evaluations for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are not performed through this service. For information on how to make a referral, please call (585) 275-3505.

What Sets Us Apart?

UR Medicine's Department of Psychiatry, one of the first of its kind, remains at the forefront of psychiatric and mental health care nearly 80 years since its inception.

As part of a world-class medical center and leading academic institution, we stay true to our mission in conducting breakthrough research and training the next generation of psychiatric and mental health clinicians, researchers and teachers. In fact, we were the birthplace of the biopsychosocial model of health and illness that serves as the cornerstone of education and training of students and trainees across the field of psychiatry.

Our work guided by the "5 Cs"—collaboration, communication, complementarity, competence, and compassion. The mission of our rapidly expanding divisions is to champion integrated, multidisciplinary care to enhance cognitive health, mental health and well-being for a broad range of patients of all ages.
