What is Anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but if you find these feelings have reached the point of disrupting your life, it’s time to seek help.

Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder, affect tens of millions of Americans. Anxiety may present as headaches, muscle tension, feeling tired, and an inability to relax.

Types of anxiety include generalized, social, phobias, and separation anxiety disorders.

UR Medicine's Treatments for Anxiety

The UR Medicine Anxiety Management Group helps patients learn to manage negative self-talk, develop a better mindset, confront and overcome fears, and escape the cycle of worry and rumination.

We provide individual, couple, family, and group counseling to patients and family members.

Our group-based treatments for people 18 and older involve a small number of people (usually eight) who meet weekly under the guidance of a professionally trained group therapist. Group therapy can help people learn about themselves, improve their relationships, and develop better coping and symptom management skills.

When compared to individual therapy, group therapy has been shown to be as effective and, for some problems, more effective. In cases of medical illness, there is substantial evidence that this form of therapy helps people cope better with symptoms and improves their lives.

Prior to starting group therapy, the group members each meet individually with the group therapist, who provides information about the group and what to expect.
