Stroke Rehabilitation
If you are healing from a stroke, you are now on the road to recovery. Your medical team may recommend acute inpatient rehabilitation to help you restore function and regain your independence.
The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at University of Rochester Medicine is the most established rehabilitation program in the region, with each team member bringing the highest level of expertise and compassion to the care of our patients.
We treat patients who are healing from any type of stroke, including thrombotic, embolic, hemorrhagic, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Our Approach
Our multidisciplinary stroke team helps manage all aspects of recovery. While some patients recover within days, recovery can take weeks to months.
To help you recover to your maximum potential, you will be evaluated for your physical, occupational, and speech therapy needs. We will work with you on intensive rehabilitation and preventative care to minimize the chances of a future stroke.
Our goals with treatment are to help you:
- Build strength
- Improve function
- Build skills needed to complete daily activities
- Improve balance, mobility, and safety awareness
- Improve speech, cognition, and swallowing
- Reduce modifiable risk factors and secondary complications
- Facilitate community inclusion and participation in life roles and interests
- Introduce resources
- Promote healthy coping and adaptation skills
Neurological rehabilitation may consist of:
- Physical or occupational therapy
- Medicine prescription
- Modalities
- Orthotics/bracing
- Speech and language therapy
- Neuropsychology
- Referrals to other disciplines when needed
We are dedicated to both the physical and emotional well-being of our patients. We have staff with extensive experience and training, including Fellowship-trained physicians and Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses, designations reserved for the highest-level experts in rehabilitative care.
What Sets Us Apart?
As part of an integrated academic health system, we track our patients’ results, including functional improvement, level of satisfaction, and return to home. Our results rank among the highest in New York State. We offer advanced technology to help patients make progress in their recovery.
The department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation gained accreditation from CARF (Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) and the Magnet Recognition Program (the gold standard of nursing), becoming the first of its kind in upstate New York to be integrated directly with both a Level 1 Trauma Center and a Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. These designations reflect higher patient satisfaction and better patient outcomes.
