Chronic Pain and Emotion Focused Therapies

Douglas Guiffrida, PhD, LMHC | Warner School of Education University of Rochester

Chronic pain is an epidemic that affects nearly 30% of the global population, which is more than those affected by heart disease, diabetes, and cancer combined. Despite technological advances in medical imaging, pharmaceuticals, injections, and surgeries, chronic pain continues to be among the fastest growing, most debilitating, and expensive medical conditions in the world. Cutting-edge neuroscience research now indicates the brain plays a powerful role in both the causes and cures of many forms of chronic pain. In this workshop participants will learn about empirically-supported mind/body and emotion-focused therapies that provide potential to heal chronic pain.
