Fellow Research

The Division of Thoracic and Foregut Surgery offers research opportunities in a highly innovative, academic setting. Fellows have the opportunity to develop clinical research projects involving both benign and malignant thoracic and foregut surgical pathology as well as topics tailored to the fellow’s particular interests. Direct involvement in the motility lab allows the fellows to become experts in the management of benign esophageal disease.  Fellows have access to medical students, residents and statisticians to help with acquisition and analysis of data. Fellows gain a robust experience and skill in the design, execution and presentation of meaningful clinical projects on regional, national and international levels.  Participation in the thoracic research also affords the opportunity to submit abstracts and manuscripts for peer-reviewed presentations and publications in highly respected journals.  The cardiac division offers ample research opportunities available through the cardiovascular research institute, large animal research lab, collaborative projects with industry and individual resident interests.  Opportunities for research are available in both the adult and congenital cardiac surgery.  Fellows are expected to publish a minimum of one article in a reputable medical journal yearly.  Funding is provided for travel for fellows who present their work at national conferences.
