The University of Rochester Family Residency Program is one of the oldest FM programs in the country. Our 12-12-12 program has just expanded this year to take a 13th resident in each year. Our program truly offers the best of both worlds – a community-hospital based experience with all of the resources of an academic medical center. Our residents work alongside residents from other specialties, but as essential rather than additional members of those teams. This provides the same volume of experience often claimed by “unopposed” programs.
We provide some of the most in-depth training in psychosocial medicine. P2 is a 5-month longitudinal rotation in the PGY-2 year that includes Psychosocial Medicine and Practice Improvement, directly supervised family meetings, and primary care counseling visits.
We also have one of the most robust OB experiences in the Northeast, with 40-60 deliveries in the 2-month rotation during internship. All continuity deliveries are supervised by family medicine faculty attendings, including family physicians with C-section privileges, and 4 FM-OB Fellows per year.
We stress community involvement and care of the underserved, including a political advocacy track for interested residents. We have 13 different Areas of Concentration to tailor your training to your interests, most of which were created by residents themselves using the resources available in our department and our university. Our Global Health experience is unique in its continuity relationship with small rural communities in southwestern Honduras, and funding to support resident participation in these trips.
Rochester is a fantastic community, with low cost of living and activities to cater to almost any interest. The Finger Lakes region is renowned for its beaches, water sports, and wineries. The Adirondack Mountains are 4½ hours away, and Toronto is 3 hours away. Rochester itself has museums, minor league sports, music, art, and restaurants to rival much larger cities. Your life outside of work will be just as rewarding as your professional development.
