About the CAMPEP- Accredited Program

The University of Rochester Therapeutic Medical Physics Residency Program is a two-year, CAMPEP-accredited clinical training program that provides comprehensive education and hands-on experience in radiation oncology physics. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) in 2022, our program is committed to preparing residents for independent clinical practice and lifelong professional growth.
We welcome applicants who demonstrate strong work ethic, curiosity, and a genuine passion for a career in medical physics. Eligible candidates must have completed a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program or hold a physics-related Ph.D. with a CAMPEP certificate prior to the start of residency.
Integrated Clinical Experience
Our residency is fully embedded within the day-to-day operations of the Department of Radiation Oncology. Residents work closely with a multidisciplinary clinical team—including medical physicists, radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and nursing staff—gaining exposure to routine clinical activities as well as advanced procedures.
Training occurs primarily at Strong Memorial Hospital, with additional experience available at affiliated outpatient clinics. This environment ensures residents encounter a diverse patient population, varied treatment techniques, and contemporary clinical challenges.
Hands-On Learning and Professional Development
Residents participate actively in all aspects of clinical medical physics, including:
- Daily quality assurance and machine performance checks
- Treatment planning for 3D, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, and SRS
- HDR Brachytherapy procedures
- Imaging, simulation, and patient-specific QA
- Special procedures, equipment upgrades, and commissioning activities
Education is delivered under the supervision of the residency leadership and faculty, with structured rotations that guide residents through core competencies outlined by CAMPEP standards. Details of these rotations are described in our Curriculum section.
Commitment to Excellence
Our program provides a supportive, collaborative learning environment where residents are encouraged to ask questions, take initiative, and grow professionally. Through direct mentorship, hands-on training, department conferences, and case-based learning, residents develop the technical skill, clinical judgment, and communication abilities required to excel as practicing medical physicists.
