Medical Physics Residency Program

Group of residents

The Therapeutic Medical Physics Residency Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is a two-year CAMPEP-accredited clinical training program designed to prepare graduates for successful careers in radiation oncology physics. Our program provides comprehensive, hands-on clinical experience within a collaborative academic medical center known for high-quality patient care, advanced technologies, and a strong culture of teaching.

Residents work closely with board-certified medical physicists, radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and clinical staff, gaining the skills necessary for independent and competent clinical practice. Training occurs primarily at Strong Memorial Hospital, a tertiary referral center and the region’s only academic radiation oncology department.

Program highlights

  • CAMPEP-accredited (initial accreditation 2022)
  • Structured two-year clinical curriculum covering all major areas of radiation oncology physics
  • Exposure to advanced technologies, including SRS/SBRT, HDR brachytherapy, 4D imaging, adaptive radiation therapy, and comprehensive machine QA
  • Strong emphasis on independent clinical responsibility, supervised by experienced faculty
  • Opportunities for research, conference presentations, and publication
  • Supportive culture centered on teaching, mentorship, and professional development

Educational Philosophy

Our program emphasizes:

  • Direct mentorship with constructive feedback
  • Routine oral and written evaluations modeled after ABR exam structure
  • Encouragement of research throughout residency
  • Training residents to become future leaders in clinical practice, education, and research

Residents participate in chart rounds, journal clubs, physics meetings, and research team discussions, gaining broad exposure to academic medicine.
