Getting Started for Postdoctoral Appointees

RCR Training | Health Insurance | Access Services and Support | CPD| Postdoc Association

Welcome and congratulations on your appointment as a Postdoctoral Appointee at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry!

The Office for Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) is the central office that supports the postdoctoral community in the School of Medicine and Dentistry. GEPA is here to help you, so please be sure to contact us if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, etc.

While your Departmental Administrator will take care of the vast majority of details that must be attended to in order for you to get started with our institution, we in GEPA would also like to highlight a few important resources and opportunities:

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training

Postdoctoral appointees are required to complete RCR education by completing the Ethics and Professional Integrity in Research course. The training must be completed as soon as possible upon the start of your appointment; the course is held during the Fall semester each year. Policy and Waiver Information

Health Insurance

Postdoctoral appointees are eligible for medical, dental and voluntary vision insurance from Garnett-Powers and Associates. Please visit the Garnett-Powers website to enroll. You must sign up for health insurance within 30 days of hire.

Questions? Contact our dedicated Garnett-Powers representative, Candace Nicholson, at URPD@Garnett-Powers.com or (844) 243-0027.

Access Services and Support

The Office for Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs offers a variety of access services for postdoctoral appointees in the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD). These services aim to provide an inclusive experience and equal access to academic content and program requirements. Our approach relies on collaboration among trainees, the SMD access coordinator, and instructors/other faculty members. Visit our Access Services and Support webpage for more information.

Center for Professional Development (CPD)

Check out our Center for Professional Development (CPD), especially for postdocs and graduate students!

Schedule an appointment for a Meet and Greet with either or both of our CPD Specialists to learn more about the services they offer to postdocs.

UR Postdoctoral Association

The UR Postdoctoral Association (PDA) provides career development, networking and professional recognition opportunities. Getting involved in a PDA committee also provides invaluable real-world administrative experience that will look great on your CV! We encourage you to get involved with your PDA; your email address will automatically be added to the PDA distribution list by GEPA. Read the latest PDA Newsletter.
