Welcome New DFM Faculty Members
Two new faculty members have joined the Family Medicine team. Sarah Minney, M.D., is a Senior Instructor - Department of Family Medicine, and John Doughton, M.D., is an Assistant Professor - Department of Family Medicine.
Originally from Western Massachusetts, Dr. Minney became the first person in her family to attend college when she earned her bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College. She went on to earn her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2020, and she completed her residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2023.
When she started her medical-school training, Dr. Minney did not fully understand all the various specialties in medicine. But her work in a crisis nursery gave her a whole new perspective.
“I thought you could take one of two tracks in medicine: primary care or surgery,” Dr. Minney said. “From my experience in family medicine and in the nursery, I realized that I wanted to take care of children and the whole family.”
Dr. Minney currently focuses on inpatient medicine and obstetrics, with an emphasis on caring for underserved patients. She is enjoying training residents and medical students – believing that it is important to stay in an academic environment.
“Every experience that I’ve had in family medicine has been great,” she added. "We have the opportunity to care for people who aren’t being cared for in other ways.”
Dr. Doughton focuses his practice on walk-in care, on precepting residents in the clinic, and on point-of-care (POCUS) ultrasound, working with David Waldman, M.D., Ph.D.
In addition to his DFM responsibilities, Dr. Doughton continues to serve as Director of Ultrasound Teaching at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. His areas of interest include underserved care, immigration and Latino health, and office-based procedures.
Dr. Doughton completed his fellowship and residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. He earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
