Course Reserves Guide

Course Reserves provide students with convenient access to course materials. Access may be provided through print materials held at the library or through electronic resources in Blackboard.

Print Course Reserves

The Print Course Reserves Collection, located at the Miner Library Answer Desk, helps ensure that assigned and recommended course materials remain available to all students by providing a secure location and offering limited loan periods and in-library use options. Materials are often placed on reserve when they are in high demand, expensive, difficult to obtain, or when instructors want students to have access to supplemental materials without requiring them to purchase their own copies.

What Can Be Placed on Course Reserves

Materials from:

  • Miner Library
  • Other University of Rochester Libraries
  • An instructor's personal collection

Items borrowed from institutions outside URochester cannot be placed on Course Reserves.

Loan Period Options

Instructors may choose from the following loan periods:

  • 2-Hour In-Library Use
  • 2-Hour with Overnight Option
  • 1 Day
  • 3 Days

How To Place Print Materials on Course Reserves

  • Complete the Course Reserves Request Form.
  • Email the completed form or bring it to the Answer Desk.
  • Library staff will retrieve materials from Miner Library or other URochester Libraries on your behalf.
  • Deliver instructor-owned materials to the Answer Desk.
  • Submit requests at least one week before materials will be assigned. Processing times may be longer if an item is currently checked out, being transferred from another URochester Library, or on order.

Students may request Course Reserves materials by title at the Answer Desk.

At the end of the designated reserve period, library-owned materials will be returned to the appropriate collection. Instructor-owned items may be picked up at the Answer Desk.

For questions about print reserves: Contact the Answer Desk at (585) 275-3361 or submit a question.

Electronic Course Reserves

Faculty may choose to provide access to journal articles, book chapters, and web content in Blackboard. This allows students enrolled in a course to access resources online through the course site. For instructions on how to create stable URLs that will properly authenticate users and give them access to URochester Library resources, view Creating Persistent Links to Library Resources.
