Dr. Herman grew up in Lexington, KY and first came to Rochester for undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester (BS, Neuroscience) and Eastman School of Music (BM with Performer’s Certificate, Horn Performance). After a year of graduate horn studies at Yale School of Music, she returned to Rochester for the Medical Scientist Training Program and completed her MD and PhD (Microbiology and Immunology) degrees, receiving the Dean’s Award for excellence in research. Dr. Herman’s thesis studies focused on the pathogenesis of eczema in Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, and she is very interested in continuing to investigate the development and maintenance of mucosal barrier homeostasis and tolerance to environmental antigens early in life. After medical school, Dr. Herman completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Boston Combined Residency Program before returning to Rochester for fellowship in Allergy and Immunology.

Dr. Herman has been awarded a 2023 John Leddy Fellowship Research Grant for her project “Assessing the impact of dupilumab on the development of food allergy in pediatric patients with severe atopic dermatitis.” Dr. Herman is being mentored by Lisa Beck, MD and Kirsi Jarvinen-Seppo, MD, PhD.
