Research & Clinical Trials Through the research we are performing in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, we are helping to discover the treatments of tomorrow. And through our active role in clinical trials, we are helping our patients have access to the most promising new treatments today. As the region's only Academic Medical Center, URMC is the leader in medical research. We are also the only center in the region that is performing gastroenterology and hepatology research. Our investigators perform several types of research: Basic research, which explores fundamental principles underlying disease. Basic research is usually performed in a laboratory. Translational research takes what we have learned in the lab and begins to apply it—or "translate" it—to clinical settings. Clinical trials test new treatments to see if they are both safe and effective. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has six principal investigators devoted to research: Vivek Kaul, M.D., FACG Lawrence Saubermann, M.D. Jonathan Huang, D.O. Shivagi T. Kothari, M.D. Gopal Ramaraju, M.D. David Yule, Ph.D. URMC Gastroenterology & Hepatology also has one faculty member involved in clinical research: Lawrence J. Saubermann, M.D. Learn more about Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinical Trials at URMC.
