ACGME-approved Clinical Fellowships

Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship offers a rich blend of tradition and innovation, guided by faculty who are deeply committed to teaching, clinical excellence, and research. Fellows benefit from a flexible curriculum tailored to their career goals, along with extensive hands-on experience in electrodiagnostic evaluation of both central and peripheral nervous system disorders. The program features a robust, evidence-based didactic series in EMG, EEG, epilepsy, and neuromuscular disease, complemented by monthly journal clubs and abundant research opportunities spanning basic science through clinical application. With high annual EMG and EEG volumes, advanced equipment, a strong neuromuscular ultrasound program, and an experienced team of technologists, fellows train in an environment designed to support mastery. Neurology residency graduates with an interest in EEG/epilepsy, EMG/neuromuscular medicine, or both will find a comprehensive ACGME-accredited pathway that prepares them for ABPN subspecialty certification and a successful future in either academic or clinical practice.

Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

The University of Rochester Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited program that prepares trainees for subspecialty certification through comprehensive exposure to the full range of neuromuscular diseases in both adult and pediatric populations. Fellows train across specialized clinics, such as MDA, SMA, Duchenne, ALS, and Neuropathy, and gain experience in inpatient care, with a dedicated pediatric track available in most years. The program offers advanced instruction in neuromuscular ultrasound, electrodiagnostic testing, single-fiber EMG, and biopsy interpretation, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and featuring nationally recognized teaching. Multidisciplinary collaboration with genetics, pulmonology, PM&R, physical therapy, cardiology, and social work enriches the clinical experience, while robust research opportunities, including clinical trials and NIH-funded projects, prepare graduates for meaningful careers in academic medicine and clinical practice.

Departmental Fellowship

T32/Advanced Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

To apply for the T32/Advanced Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship, you will need to have completed a Neurology Residency and an ACGME Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship Training. The Experimental Neurotherapeutics (ExNT) Fellowship is a two-year, NIH-funded T32 training program that prepares fellows to design and conduct clinical trials for neurological diseases. Established in 1990 at the University of Rochester, the program has produced leaders in academia, industry, and government who have shaped multicenter trials, FDA approvals, and innovations in patient care. Fellows train under world-class mentor teams, gaining experience across a wide range of adult and pediatric neurologic disorders. The curriculum emphasizes research integrity, rigorous study design, participant safety, collaboration, and the development of independent scientific careers. Through hands-on involvement in projects at multiple stages of development, fellows learn to frame hypotheses, build protocols, navigate regulatory processes, manage data, plan statistical analyses, and pursue funding, while also contributing to national trial committees and monitoring bodies. Additional fellows may be supported through federal, institutional, and foundation sources.
