5^th Annual Paul M. Schyve, MD Center for Bioethics Conference June 11-12, 2027 

In 2019 the very successful "Ethics in Clinical Practice" conference was developed. The 124 participants enjoyed active workshops and the opportunity to network with health care employees, community members, and UR students from across Western New York. Because of its success, the conference is now an annual event and will continue to focus on important ethical questions in health care. In 2026, we had our conference reach a national level with three out-of-state workshop presenters and one out-of-state poster presenter. We cannot wait to keep growing and evolving, addressing the questions happening in our world today.

This year’s conference will bring together healthcare professionals, ethicists, scholars, and policymakers to explore ethical dilemmas and questions related to the theme: The Ethics of Taking Sides: When Judgments Collide.

This year’s conference examines disagreement among healthcare professionals, including clinical ethicists. Disagreement is both an inevitable part of professional practice and something that raises ethical challenges. The conference program will explore when disagreement is valuable and when it becomes unproductive, from clashes over clinical judgment to genuine differences in values and reasoning. Rather than treating consensus as the only mark of success, the program will consider alternative ways of thinking about resolving disagreements. Sessions will examine how to navigate interprofessional disagreement ethically and situate the practice of disagreement within its broader social and historical context.
