Metabolic Bone Diseases

Make Appointments & Get Care

What are Metabolic Bone Diseases?

The bones in our bodies are living tissue, so bone metabolism is affected by nutrition, exercise, medical illness and medications, as well as hormones including parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, estrogen, and testosterone.

Abnormalities in bone metabolism can result in bone disorders and imbalance of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus.

UR Medicine's Treatments for Metabolic Bone Diseases

Depending on your condition, you might be seen by experts in Orthopaedics, Endocrinology, or both.

The Metabolic Bone Disease program within the UR Medicine Endocrinology Clinic focuses on the evaluation and care of patients with conditions that affect bone and mineral metabolism. Some conditions that we treat include:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Paget's disease of the bone
  • Genetic conditions such as XLH and osteogenesis imperfecta

Team members work closely with other expert teams at UR Medicine, including pediatric endocrinology, orthopaedics, nephrology, rheumatology, dentistry, endocrine surgery, and medical genetics to provide comprehensive care.

Treatments include oral agents, injections, and infusions. We also work with patients to create an individual diet, lifestyle, and treatment plan to improve bone health.
