Make Appointments & Get Care

Obesity is a chronic disease that affects about one in three adults. Those who are obese are at higher risk for illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gallstones, joint problems, heart disease, and cancer.

UR Medicine's Treatments for Obesity

UR Medicine’s specialized Obesity/Diabetes Clinic offers physician-guided lifestyle programs, medications, and endoscopic and surgical options to help you lose weight.

A physical exam and possibly blood tests help us identify conditions such as diabetes or others that can cause obesity. For surgical consultations, we work with your physician, along with our surgeons and dietitians, to determine your potential for long-term success.

Options include:

Lifestyle Management

  • Lifestyle Medicine at Highland Hospital offers programs help people make simple changes in their everyday lives to improve their health and improve their mood. Learn more about Lifestyle Medicine at Highland Hospital
  • The Lose Weight Program at Center for Community Health & Prevention (CCHP) offers nutrition counseling from a certified dietitian; a weight-loss group program with guidance from a weight loss expert in a support group setting; and a Diabetes Prevention Program that combines nutrition, weight loss, and exercise counseling. Medical Therapy

Certain medications, such as Glucagon-Like-Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists, Naltrexone/Bupropion and Phentermine/Topiramate, can help reduce weight and prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.

Intragastric Balloon

Also called “weight loss balloon,” intragastric balloon is a non-invasive procedure that kick-starts weight loss by inserting a soft yet durable balloon comfortably into your stomach. Learn more about Intragastric Balloon

Bariatric Surgery

Our bariatric surgical team specializes in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, using small incisions and a camera to guide the surgery. Smaller incisions result in decreased scarring, reduced pain, fewer complications, and a quicker recovery. Learn more about Bariatric Surgery
