Clinical Experience
During this 4-year program, 35 months are devoted to clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery across various University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) sites - Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH), Golisano Children's Hospital (GCH), and Sawgrass Ambulatory Center (Sawgrass). Please see our Clinical Rotations page for more details.
The program contains a comprehensive didactic curriculum consisting of clinical and surgical conferences, seminars, case reviews, journal clubs, practice management courses, and more. Please see our Conferences and Courses page for more details.
Research and Scholarly Activity
During training, each resident is expected to prepare and submit at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal for consideration for publication.
This work may be the result of laboratory or clinical research, and each resident is encouraged to formulate and implement an original project very early in their training, ideally during the first year. However, significant involvement in established faculty research can satisfy this requirement.
At the very minimum, an abstract must be submitted to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery-AAOMS annual meeting for presentation by every resident in their senior year. In addition, local and regional meeting presentations are encouraged and supported.
Resident Duties, by Year
First-year residents spend 10 months with the OMFS service. During this time they work closely with senior residents, providing both inpatient and outpatient care, and have primary responsibility for examining, diagnosing, and treating patients in the outpatient clinic.
Residents also assume responsibility for inpatients under the supervision of the chief resident, assist the chiefs and staff with OR cases, and serve as primary surgeon in many operative cases at Sawgrass, GCH, and SMH.
Second-year residents spend 4 months in General Surgery, 2 months in Trauma Surgery, 5 months with the Department of Anesthesiology at SMH, and 1 month with the OMFS service.
Responsibilities include performing procedures under LA and/or sedation on AC-4 at SMH, and serving as primary surgeon in many operative cases at Sawgrass, GCH, and SMH.
They also teach basic principles of exodontia to EIOH General Practice Residents and other dental residents rotating with OMFS at AC-4.
Third-year residents spend most of their time on AC-4 at SMH. An additional 1 month is spent with the Plastic Surgery service and ENT departments. Each resident also completes a 2-week craniofacial rotation in plastic surgery.
Primary responsibilities are performing outpatient sedations on AC-4, assisting in the OR at SMH, and supervising 1st and 2nd year residents performing simple dentoalveolar procedures at AC-4.
These residents function as "back-up" to the on-call junior resident and report to the chief residents.
Fourth-year residents function as senior residents, assuming responsibility for the overall function of the OMFS service.
These residents are expected to be the primary operating surgeon on all major cases performed at SMH and GCH.
One senior resident functions as the Clinic Chief and the other as the OR Chief for 6 months each.
Outcomes Assessment & Board Certification
Each year, residents take the annual Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Training Examination (OMSITE) of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
The URMC-EIOH program is designed to meet the educational requirements of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and to prepare residents to obtain board certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
URMC residents completing the program and taking the ABOMS exam have passed, at a rate comparable to the national average. Success on the ABOMS examination is a function of training, experience and, most importantly, individual preparation. However, this is only one measure of the quality of an OMS program.
Master of Science (MS) in Dental Sciences
A Master of Science in Dental Sciences, offered through EIOH, can be incorporated into a 4-year OMFS residency program (OMFS/MS).
For more details, please visit the EIOH Master's Degree Program webpage.
Executive Master in Business Administration (EMBA)
The EMBA program is offered through the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester, and can be incorporated into a 4-year OMFS residency program (OMFS/EMBA).
This degree will be earned within 3 years and will not interfere with the duration, the experience, nor the responsibilities of the residency.
The EMBA degree will be offered to one resident in the 4-year OMFS residency program.
Stipend and Benefits
Residents receive a stipend and are eligible for benefits.
