What Depression Can Feel Like

Depression isn’t always obvious. It often shows up in small, everyday moments that are easy to overlook but hard to carry.

  • Struggling to focus at your desk (like reading the same thing over and over without it sticking)
  • Feeling overwhelmed by even small decisions
  • A lingering sense of heaviness or flatness that doesn’t lift
  • Going through the motions (e.g., smiling, responding) but not fully feeling present
  • Having little energy at home, with the couch or your phone becoming an easy escape
  • Letting dishes, messages, or plans pile up and then feeling guilty about it
  • Telling yourself you’re just tired, even though rest doesn’t help
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Finding it harder to start or finish things you used to care about
  • Doing the bare minimum just to get through the day, feeling stuck in the process

You might recognize that something isn’t right. You may even remember feeling different before. And even with that awareness, it can still feel difficult to change.

You don’t have to manage this alone. You can reach out to EAP at (585)-276-9110 for free, confidential support.
