Rhinoplasty (including Revision and Ethnic Rhinoplasty)

Closeup of woman's face and nose, brown eyes and curly dark brown hair.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is surgery to change the size and shape of your nose. It is used to restore breathing, improve the appearance, or sometimes both.

How does it work?

The cartilage and bone under the skin of the nose can be changed to improve the appearance of the nose. In cases where breathing is narrowed, the septum is straightened and used for cartilage grafts that help create more support for the nose to prevent collapse.

Recovery?

1-2 weeks. After the first week, you may gradually increase activity back to normal.

What to expect after surgery:

Following surgery, tape and a splint is placed on top of the nose to keep things in place as healing occurs. If the septum is straightened as well then splints are placed on the inside of the nose as well. These are removed one week after surgery. If the nasal bones need to be moved, you may notice significant swelling and bruising of the nose and around the eyes. The majority of swelling of the outside of the nose improves 1 month after surgery but will continue to resolve over the course of a year after surgery.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is surgery to change the size and shape of your nose. It is used to restore breathing, improve the appearance, or sometimes both. Sometimes outcomes are not what you expected. In these cases a second, third, or fourth surgery may be necessary to achieve your desired outcome. These surgeries are called “revision rhinoplasty”

In cases of revision rhinoplasty, cartilage from other sources such as the rib, ear, or prepared off-the-shelf cartilage may be needed to rebuild the nose.

The majority of swelling of the outside of the nose improves 1 month after surgery but will continue to resolve over the course of a year after surgery. Every time surgery is performed on the nose, there is disruption of blood flow to the skin and underlying structures. This leads to a higher risk of complications including, scarring, infection, skin loss, and poor cosmetic outcomes.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Desired qualities in facial aesthetics differ by culture and ethnic backgrounds. Not all noses are the same and our goals are to create a nose that is harmonious with your face. It is important during your consultation to discuss the changes you would like to see so that we can find the best solution together to obtain your desired outcome. Sometimes outcomes are not what you expected and in many cases revisions may be needed to remove implants that have gotten infected.
