About Our Program


To provide a broad inpatient pharmacy experience, with opportunities to both observe and participate in multiple aspects of operational and clinical hospital pharmacy services. These functions include preparing, compounding, and dispensing prescriptions and medications for patients of Highland Hospital (neonate, pediatric, adult, geriatric) in accordance with all applicable departmental policies and procedures as well as all state and federal laws and regulations for pharmacy practice.

Program Details

The expected commitment by the intern and the hospital is two years. It is expected that the intern will work full-time (40 hrs/week) during summer break unless required to participate in a pharmacy-school required rotation or event. Start/end dates for the summer full-time requirement will be mutually agreed upon by the Director of Pharmacy Operations and intern. The intern will be required to work 2 weekend shifts a month during the school year, and will have the opportunity to pick-up per diem shifts as desired, but it is not required.

Hours

  • 1st Year Summer: 40 hours a week; Weekdays, Evenings; 1 in every 4 weekends 
  • 1st Year during School/Breaks: 2 weekend shifts a month and per diem 
  • 2nd Year Summer: 40 hours a week; Weekdays, Evenings; 1 in every 4 weekends 
  • 2nd Year during School/Breaks: 2 weekend shifts a month and per diem

1st Year Program

  • 80% Pharmacy Practice 
    • Assist with filling, dispensing, preparation, and delivery of medications
    • Restocking of automated drug dispensing cabinets
    • Assists in daily restocking of all areas of the pharmacy
    • Fill inpatient emergency medication/RSI boxes
    • Compounding of intravenous admixtures
    • Participation in Q/A assessment projects (media testing for sterile compounding)
    • Exposure/Training:
      • Pharmacy packaging technology
      • Narcotic Vault
  • 20% Introduction to Clinical Practice
    • Project identification and development 
    • Drug Information Questions
    • Attendance to Resident-led Journal Clubs and Clinical Conferences
    • Medication Counseling (through experience with Transitions of Care pharmacists)
    • Pharmacist Shadowing/Rounding
      • Distribution Pharmacists
      • General Med/Surgical Floor Pharmacists
      • Transitions of Care Pharmacists

2nd Year Program

  • 50% Advanced Pharmacy Practice
    • Assist with filling, dispensing, preparation, and delivery of medications
    • Restocking of automated drug dispensing cabinets
    • Assists in daily restocking of all areas of the pharmacy, including both medications and non-medications
    • Fill inpatient emergency medication/RSI boxes
    • Compounding of intravenous admixtures
    • Participation in Q/A assessment projects (media testing for sterile compounding)
    • Assists in daily restocking of all areas of the pharmacy, including both medications and non-medications
  • 50% Clinical Practice
    • Project(s) implementation and completion
    • Technician/Pharmacist In-service (10-15 minutes generally)
    • Drug Information Questions
    • Triaging Phone Calls (compatibility questions, drug administration questions, etc), Basic checking tasks
    • Attendance to Resident-led Journal Clubs and Clinical Conferences
    • Intern Clinical Responsibilities
      • Medication Counseling 
      • IV to PO Conversion Assessment 
      • Liquid to solid dose conversions
      • Others

How to Apply

In order to apply you must meet the following criteria:

  • Attend a United States or Canadian pharmacy school
  • Eligible for a New York State intern permit
  • Must be in at least the first professional year of pharmacy school
  • Able to work weekends during the academic year
