Residency Purpose

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Highland Hospital builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists, who are responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions and who are eligible for board certification and for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Residency Candidates:

We will be participating in the ASHP Midyear Residency Showcase (Booth 5508) on Tuesday, December 9th, from 8am-11am, along with many other programs from the University of Rochester Medical Center. 

We will be hosting additional identical virtual informational sessions for potential candidates on November 18th from 12pm-1pm (EST) and December 18th from 4pm-5pm (EST); to present our program and answer questions. We will be participating in the SNPhA x ACCP Virtual Residency Showcase on November 13th from 5pm-6pm (EST). Interested candidates are encouraged to register and participate in this national event; and to register to meet with our preceptors and residents. 

For resident candidates from New York State Schools of Pharmacy, please consider visiting us virtually, as we will be participating in the NYSCHP Statewide Residency and Fellowship Showcase on November 6th from 3pm-4:30pm (EST). Registration information can be found by clicking here.

Competencies


The resident will function as a key member of the health care team and be accountable for achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes for their patients. The graduate resident is expected to gain competencies in the following areas:

  • Patient care
  • Practice Advancement
  • Leadership
  • Teaching and Education

This intensive training involves the resident participating in the following activities:

  • Designing, recommending and managing drug treatment regimens for hospitalized patients in internal medicine and a variety of specialties
  • Playing a key role in the continuity of care of patients through medication reconciliation and discharge counseling
  • Participating in pharmacy practice management and patient safety activities to broaden the resident’s understanding of the role of pharmacy and its integration into the healthcare system
  • Exploring specialty areas of patient care through various electives, including up to 8 weeks of rotations at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Pharmacists completing their residency at Highland Hospital will have gained the skills necessary to be competent and confident practitioners of pharmaceutical care for patients. These pharmacists will develop the skills necessary to become valuable providers of education on medication therapy related topics to other health care professionals and patients. The resident will demonstrate professional maturity by developing and following a personal philosophy of excellence, monitoring his or her own performance and exhibiting a commitment to the profession of pharmacy.

Accreditation

Thisashp PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency conducted by Highland Hospital of Rochester, New York is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). Its goals, objectives, and evaluation procedures are consistent with the goals and objectives established by ASHP.
