Alumni Access to Miner Library

University of Rochester alumni are welcome to use Miner Library during regular operating hours. Library staff are available to assist alumni in finding and accessing print and electronic resources. Appointments are required to access materials in the History of Medicine Collection. 

Services Available to Alumni

Alumni may:

  • Use library public spaces.
  • Use designated quick-computing workstations with internet access.
  • Access print materials within the library.
  • Print and photocopy materials using self-service equipment (fees apply).
  • Access subscribed electronic resources while onsite.
  • Connect to the University Guest Wi-Fi network.
  • Borrow print books from URochester Libraries collections for use outside the library. A URochester Alumni ID is required for this service. See the resources below for information on obtaining an Alumni ID. 

Services Not Available to Alumni

  • Literature search services. Alumni conducting research are encouraged to use the free PubMed database or contact their institutional or public library for research assistance.
  • Access to Computing Center resources.
  • Interlibrary loan services. Visitors should place interlibrary loan requests through their institutional or public library.
  • Swipe access to Miner Library.

Remote Access to Electronic Resources

Publisher licensing agreements restrict remote access to subscribed electronic resources to current URochester faculty, staff, and students. However, visitors, including alumni, may access these resources while on site, as noted above.

Alumni may obtain off-campus access to selected resources (mostly humanities journals) through the Alumni Gateway. Access via the Alumni Gateway is managed by Rush Rhees Library on River Campus.

How to get a University Alumni ID for SMD graduates:

  • Complete the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry Request for Letter of Verification Form online. Print form is also available at the following location:
    • School of Medicine and Dentistry - Offices for Medical Education, G-7644
  • If using a printed form: fax, scan, mail, email or deliver to:
  • After you receive verification from the Registrar's Office, take it to the Health Sciences Campus ID office, G-7009, (585) 273-2000 to have an Alumni ID issued.
  • Present your Alumni ID at the Miner Library Answer Desk to be registered in the Library circulation system which will allow you to borrow print books from the Miner Library collection. There is no registration fee.
