7.1 Academic Assistant Professor Reappointment
Reappointment of an Assistant Professor at the completion of the first appointment period requires a comprehensive departmental review.
7.2 Senior Faculty Promotion/Tenure
Referee letters are required as part of the required materials for promotion and tenure of senior rank faculty. Department chairs and center directors should reference the template referee request letter External Reviewer Form. This form must accompany external letters of reference to ensure that recommendation letters are written by those who do not have a bias or conflict of interest.
7.3 Fast Track Process
Upon request and approval by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, a Fast Track review of rank and credentials may be conducted for senior rank faculty hires. The process provides an initial informal assessment of a senior faculty candidate’s credentials for their proposed rank and components prior to completion of the recruitment process.
The goal of the Fast Track process is to increase accuracy of the rank and components within a final offer letter and be consistent with the final recommendation of the ad hoc Steering Committee. Steering Committee vote is required as well as other processes consistent with the SMD Faculty Regulations.
Request for Fast Track review must be made by the chair or director to the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs. Required documentation will be requested when a Fast Track review is approved to proceed.
7.4 Faculty Research Appointments
Faculty appointed as Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor: may not be paid 100% from a grant account (GR5…).
7.5 Visiting Faculty
- Visiting appointments are generally for faculty who have a primary affiliation at another institution.
- Visitors who require a J1 visa, departments complete the J1 Scholar Request form, with supporting documentation. Upload to department box folder.
- Visitors who have patient contact must be credentialed (i.e., those that visit to teach either a new technique or how to use equipment).
7.6 Simultaneous Faculty Appointments
Full and part-time faculty (50% effort or greater) need to seek approval from their relevant division/department chair and the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs before accepting a simultaneous appointment at another institution or entity.
- Approval required whether simultaneous appointment is paid or unpaid
