Mapping an SMDNAS Share

New Share or New User

If this is a new share, or you've just been added to an existing share, you will need to log out of your current session, and log back into your computer. If you have received an email indicating you now have permission to  a share, save your information, log out and log back in.

Access problems with URMC resources can be caused by one of several issues. URMC Resources need to be accessed using URMC logins, on URMC managed computing resources, connected to a URMC network or through the URMC VPN.

Supported Computer Configuration

  1. The computer is URMC issued and supported.
  2. The URMC login being used is a valid and active.
  3. The computer is connected to URMC network (Wired or WiFi) or VPN (virtual private network) with proper URMC issued credentials.


Unsupported Configurations

  1. A personal computer
  2. A computer logged into the UR network
  3. A UR login authentication from UR,
  4. Using multiple logins from one computer


Accessing the Share

For Windows users, you can simply enter \\ or \\ in your File Explorer address bar.

For Mac users, open a Finder window, and under 'Go -> Connect to Server', you can enter smb:// or smb://

Windows 10 Instructions

Open File Explorer and Select This PC


Select Map Network Drive from the dropdown menu


In the Drive list, click a drive letter.


You can choose any available letter.

In the Folder box, type the path of the folder or computer, or click Browse to find the folder or computer.

To connect every time you log on to your computer, select the Reconnect at logon check box.


Click Finish.

Your computer is now connected or mapped, to the network drive.

Mac Instructions

Open Finder, click Go and select Connect to Server window


Enter the network address to the network drive you want to map, For example smb://networkcomputer/networkshare and click Connect




Enter your login/password and click OK

Once the new window opens, Drag drive_name from the top of the box to Favorite sidebar


Drag drive_name from the top of the box to Dock 


Right click (Tap track pad with two fingers) on the new folder created on dock. Then, select List and Folder  

The drive will now appear on your Dock and in the Finder window sidebar
