Jagiellonian University Medical College - Krakow, Poland

The Department of Neurology has a formal affiliation encompassing teaching and research with the Neurology Clinic at the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow, Poland.

The Jagiellonian University was founded in 1364 and is situated in one of the most beautiful medieval and renaissance cities in central Europe. Fourth-year residents have the opportunity to travel to Krakow for four weeks to teach neurology to a group of Polish medical students at the university.

University of Navarra School of Medicine, Pamplona, Spain

The University of Rochester has a formal affiliation encompassing teaching with the University of Navarra School of Medicine in Pamplona, Spain.  The University of Navarra was founded in 1952 and is situated in Pamplona, a beautiful medieval city in northeast Spain and the historical capital city of Navarra.  One fourth year resident has the opportunity to travel to Pamplona with Dr. Józefowicz for two weeks to teach neural sciences in English to Spanish medical students at the university.

Department of Neurology faculty, as well as faculty in the Neuroradiology Division of Imaging Sciences, have adjunct appointments and ongoing research programs in Zambia (The University of Zambia’s University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka and Chikankata Hospital in rural Mazabuka) and Malawi (Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre).  With advanced planning, interested PGY-3 or 4 residents can undertake a tropical neurology or neuroradiology elective in sub-Saharan Africa under the supervision of UR faculty and local specialists. Residents will have the opportunity to provide neurologic services to one of the most underserved regions of the world while also gaining first-hand clinical experience caring for conditions rarely seen in the US such as cerebral malaria and tetanus.

This rotation has a public health focus, which strives to facilitate trainees’ appreciation for the many non-medical factors impacting the health of the population while framing the learning and service delivery experience within the appropriate geopolitical and socioeconomic framework. Rotating residents will also contribute to the medical education of local trainees, while also participating in the UR research programs during this rotation.

The Neurology Peru-Rochester exchange program (NeuroPro) is an international collaboration established in 2019-2020 by institutional agreements between the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, New York, USA, the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín de Arequipa, Arequipa, Perú, and the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Perú. The goals of the NeuroPro are to promote global equity in medical education, foster cross-cultural exchange and cultural humility, and engage in the symbiotic building of local expertise through cultural immersion and educational innovation. The NeuroPro includes international elective rotations with clinical and teaching components for selected last-year medical students of the participating institutions, as well as international observational experiences for selected neurology residents of the participating institutions. The NeuroPro also includes virtual, team-based learning activities based on case discussions every two months. These activities are open to last-year medical students, neurology residents and faculty of the participating institutions. Through in-person and virtual activities, the NeuroPro offers exposure to complementary and culturally diverse arrays of neurological conditions, health care systems and resource settings, which provides real-world opportunities to consolidate knowledge, identify and contrast social determinants of health, and deliberately enhance cultural humility skills.
