Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine

St. James Hospital Emergency Department provides 24-hour access to emergency care for members of the surrounding rural communities. There are approximately 17,000 patient visits per year. Advanced imaging and specialty care are available on site. Residents spend a total of 6 weeks gaining experience evaluating undifferentiated patients of a variety of ages and levels of acuity. There is excellent support from ED physicians and the staff subspecialty attendings, as well as many opportunities to gain procedural experience. There is no overnight call. All residents also get Advanced Trauma Life Support course training as part of this experience.

Pediatric Emergency Department

Residents spend one month in their R-1 year in the Rochester General Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department. The pediatric ED is staffed by Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Med-Peds residents as well as nurse practitioners, and has attending presence 24 hours a day. This very busy ED (over 25,000 visits per year) provides experience in a wide range of acute pediatric problems including orthopedics, acute mental health care, and infection workup. The pediatrics attendings in the ED are highly rated by our residents for their teaching, and the rotation is highly rated for the large number of opportunities for procedures.
