Note: reference materials, open reserve books, and journals do not circulate outside the Library.

Loan periods may differ for materials that are owned by another University of Rochester library.

Requests

You may reserve items from Miner Library collections or request delivery of materials from other University of Rochester libraries for pickup at Miner Library.

  • Find the item in DiscoverUR (the library’s catalog)
  • Log in to your library account using your Active Directory (AD) username and password
  • Under the "Get It" section, click "Request" (you must be logged in to your account using your AD credentials for options to display)
  • Complete the request form and select your preferred pickup location. For pickup at Miner Library, select Edward G. Miner Library under Health Sciences Campus.
  • Click "Send Request"
  • You will be notified via email when your item is ready for pickup at the Miner Library Answer Desk

If the item requested is already checked out, your request will be placed in a queue and you will be notified when the item becomes available.

If you need a book that is currently unavailable through University of Rochester Libraries, you may place an interlibrary loan request and we'll obtain it from another institution.

Renewals

Most items may be renewed three times and will be auto-renewed by the library system. Each renewal period is equal to the original circulation period.

If you receive an overdue notice, your item has reached the maximum number of renewals. To extend the due date beyond that period, call (585) 275-3361, submit a question, or stop by the Answer Desk. You do not need to bring the item into the library to extend the use period. We will just need your University of Rochester ID.

Renewals may not be granted if:

  • Item has been requested by another patron
  • Item is needed for course reserve
  • Fees on your account are $25 or more

Overdue and Lost Items

Two overdue reminders are sent. After the second overdue notice, if the due date is not extended or the item returned, it is considered lost and replacement charges are billed.

Replacement costs for lost or damaged items:

The library system automatically charges a default replacement fee. Fees are adjusted as follows:

  • Book - replacement fees are determined on an individual item basis
  • Mac Laptop - $2,500
  • PC Laptop - $1,500
  • Charging Unit/Power Supply - $150
  • Mouse - $25

Replacement costs are cleared when a "lost" item is returned.

If you have $25 or more in fees or items that are more than one month overdue, your library privileges may be suspended.

Returns

University-owned materials may be returned using any of the following options:

  • Service desk at any University of Rochester Libraries location
  • Book Drops
    • Miner Library - located outside the front doors of the library labeled "Book Depository"
    • Rush Rhees Library on River Campus - located at the Library Road entrance behind the library building. It is between the iZone windows and the USPS boxes, labeled "Book Depository"
  • Curbside - arrange in advance to have materials picked up by a library staff member at Crittenden Circle by calling (585) 275-3361
  • Shipping to: University of Rochester Medical Center, Edward G. Miner Library, 601 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14642

Please note: Interlibrary Loan materials and technology equipment (laptops, chargers, etc.) should be returned directly to the University of Rochester Libraries location that issued the loan.

Proxy Borrowing

Proxy borrowing allows faculty and staff to authorize designated individuals to check out library materials on their behalf.

The faculty or staff member is responsible for the materials checked out by their authorized proxy borrower(s). You may have multiple proxy borrowers and authorizations must be renewed on an annual basis. Miner Library Answer Desk staff can assist you with setting up proxy borrowing.
