Our Team
S. Craig Rooney joined URMC as its inaugural chief wellbeing officer in February 2024.
His background includes assistant professor, private practice as a psychologist, leader in collegiate health, and work at an academic health center. Prior to joining URMC, he served for 4.5 years as director of psychological services and wellbeing for the MU School of Medicine and MU Health Care, working in partnership with its CWO to establish a robust program. Before that, he was assistant director of the MU Counseling Center and of Mental Health Services at the MU Student Health Center.
Rooney earned his PhD in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2000. He completed his internship in psychology at the University of Utah Counseling Center in Salt Lake City, UT. He has published and lectured on well-being and related topics and is involved in national collaborative networks on healthcare worker wellbeing. He also serves as associate professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine.
Jessica Shand joined URMC in 2013 and was named its inaugural associate chief wellbeing officer in 2024. received her MD from the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine in 2006 and completed her residency training in Pediatrics at URMC-Golisano Children’s Hospital. She returned to URMC after completing fellowship training in pediatric cancer and blood disorders at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and National Cancer Institute.
Shand serves as associate professor of Pediatrics, Health Humanities, and Bioethics. She began working on wellness and professional fulfillment at the grassroots level at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Her published works address wellbeing support for teams caring for children with serious illness and ethical dilemmas in healthcare.
Lead Business Administrator Toni Sexton holds a BS in Secondary Mathematics Education and an MEd in Instructional Technology. She began her career teaching high school mathematics in diverse settings around the world.
Transitioning to community-based organizations, Sexton spearheaded a groundbreaking nonprofit initiative in NYC housed within a skilled nursing facility. Focused on college and career readiness for disadvantaged youth, the program aimed to foster a new generation of culturally competent eldercare professionals.
Relocating to Rochester in 2015, Sexton joined the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2019, Sexton joined the URMC Psychiatry, Collaborative Care & Wellness Division.
Executive Assistant Enza Daugherty joined URMC in 1990 as a secretary II in the Occupational Health Program.
She has worked as an assistant manager to the Occupational Health Program, an administrative assistant in Otolaryngology Research, administrative assistant to the chief administrative officer in the Department of Surgery and administrator I as assistant to the chair of Surgery prior to accepting her current positions as executive assistant to S. Craig Rooney and Jessica Shand.

Craig Rooney
Rooney and his spouse have a rescue dog who enjoys spending her time at day care, going on long walks, and making friends with anyone who will give her scritches.
Rooney is passionate about science fiction. Some of his favorite authors include Ursula K. Le Guin, Mary Doria Russell, Cixin Liu, James S. A. Corey, and N. K. Jemisin.
His favorite parts about Rochester are the people and the opportunity to be in nature in so many breathtaking locations.
Jessica Shand
Shand and her spouse have two children and love spending time outdoors. She is passionate about endurance sports, and has a Boston Marathon run streak. Shand teaches on responses to suffering and pandemics at a local divinity school, and is writing a book inspired by the incredible journeys of children with cancer.
Toni Sexton
She and her partner have a child whom she describes as the coolest person she knows.
She loves great food, being outside, and traveling. But most of her hobbies are on hold while she watches her daughter learn and grow.
When she worked in New York City, her innovative approaches garnered recognition, including presentations at the United Nations and engagements with Michelle Obama’s office at the White House.
Enza Daugherty
Daugherty and her spouse raised three children and have two fur babies who keep the entire household entertained
She is passionate about gardening, interior decorating and helping others in their time of need.
She was born and spent the first eight years of her life in the shadow of Mount Etna in Sicily, and loves returning to her childhood home to visit family and take in the sights in places like Taormina and the Mediterranean.
