University of Rochester Alumnus Advances an Integrative Model Bridging Psychiatry, Medical Informatics, and Spiritual Medicine

Bhupendra Gupta, MD, DPM (Psychiatry Residency Program, '87) recently published several articles in Louisville Medicine, including the following:

• "When Depression Isn't Just Depression: A Structured Approach for Primary Care"
• "Saint-Intelligence and the Life-GPS Framework: A Biopsychosocial Model for Self-Regulation in Primary Care and Psychiatry"
• "Cybersecurity as Clinical Care: Integrating Human Behavior, Systems Design and Physician Wellbeing"

In addition, Dr. Gupta's recent manuscript, "The Integrative Continuum of Care: A Spiritual Informatics Model," proposes an expanded model of patient care that combines traditional clinical disciplines with emerging concepts in digital health, cybersecurity, and the ethical stewardship of patient information. 

Building upon the previously described Integrative Continuum of Care (ICC), the work introduces a sixth dimension—Spiritual Informatics—that spans every level of clinical practice. The model emphasizes that optimal patient care extends beyond diagnosis and treatment to include ethical data management, clinician attentiveness, and compassionate, patient-centered communication. Rather than treating spirituality and technology as separate domains, the manuscript argues that both can work together to improve healthcare delivery while preserving patient dignity. 

This work reflects Dr. Gupta's longstanding interest in advancing interdisciplinary approaches to psychiatry and medical education. By bringing together clinical neuroscience, digital health, and the humanities, the manuscript contributes to ongoing conversations about the future of patient-centered medicine and the evolving role of physicians in an increasingly digital healthcare system. The proposed framework offers a novel perspective on how healthcare professionals can promote safety, resilience, and compassionate care while responsibly navigating the opportunities and challenges of modern health technology.

Please join us in welcoming the newest faculty members in the Department of Psychiatry! We invited them to share a few facts about themselves. 

• Peter Britton, PhD:

  •  Dr. Britton is an active member of our Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs Center of Excellence for Suicide Prevention. He also recently took on the role of Associate Chair of Faculty Affairs in our department.
    Speaking on his new role, he said, "I am incredibly honored and excited to begin the next chapter of my career as Associate Chair of Faculty Affairs."

• Tomotaro (Tomo) Monte, DO:

  •  Dr. Monte completed his time in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program before joining our Adult Inpatient services.
    Fun fact from Dr. Monte: "While staying with a Japanese family in Bolivia, I unexpectedly discovered they had known my grandparents back in Japan before immigrating to Bolivia after World War II."

• Connor Tumiel, MD

  • Dr. Tumiel recently completed his time in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program as well and will be joining the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division! 
    Fun fact from Dr. Tumiel: "Outside of work, I'm either spending time with my family or convincing myself that this is finally the Bills' year. Go Bills."

• Shaelise Tor, PhD, LMFT, CLC

  • Dr. Tor will be joining Tom O'Connor, PhD's Lab and Clinical Service at Golisano Children's Hospital Pediatric Practice (AC-6). 
    Fun fact from Dr. Tor: "I was born here in this hospital and grew up in the Rochester area. Outside of work I visit new playgrounds with my sons, attend book club, and enjoy trying new restaurants with my husband."
