What is the Partial Hospitalization Program?

UR Medicine Mental Health and Wellness Adult Partial Hospitalization program is for patients ages 18 and older. It offers short-term treatment for stabilizing mental health symptoms that have gotten significantly worse and are affecting a person’s safety or daily functioning.

The Mental Health and Wellness Adult Partial Hospitalization Program is for adults who are:

  • Experiencing serious symptoms of a psychiatric disorder (such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or other conditions) that may be impairing their ability to function safely.
  • Not succeeding in a traditional outpatient setting.
  • Motivated to take part in a group-based treatment setting on a daily basis for one to two weeks.
  • Committed to ending any substance abuse.
  • Dedicated to learning healthy coping skills to manage symptoms.

What to Expect from the Partial Hospitalization Program

To start your journey with the UR Medicine Mental Health and Wellness care team, you will need a referral from your current provider. At your first appointment, we will give you a brief introduction to our Adult Partial Hospitalization program. You will also meet with a financial counselor about program costs and insurance coverage. Then you will be evaluated by a clinician to make sure this program is right for you.

Individuals in our program receive partial hospitalization services including:

  • Five group treatment sessions a day, Monday through Friday
  • Individual therapist contact, one to two times a week
  • Safety planning
  • Medication assessment and management
  • Education and support for patients and families
  • Coordination of care with other providers
  • Discharge planning to other healthcare providers
  • Referral to mental health follow-up

The length of the program depends on your treatment needs, but the average is roughly two weeks.

Provider Referral Process

An outpatient provider, emergency department, or inpatient unit may refer patients to the Adult Partial Hospitalization Program. An intake coordinator will contact the patient to schedule an intake evaluation to determine eligibility for the program.

Referrals within UR Medicine, providers complete the referral order in eRecord.

Referrals from outside UR Medicine, the referring provider should complete the Adult Partial Hospitalization referral form

What Sets Us Apart?

"Partial hospitalization" means you come to our program each day to receive intensive daily treatment like you would if you were in the hospital, but you spend your evenings at home. As a result, you get the advantages of an inpatient program—like multiple group sessions each day—without staying in the hospital full-time.

This helps to reduce symptoms so you can resume functioning and be more successful in outpatient treatment. It can often be a good alternative to, or transition from, an inpatient psychiatric admission.
