Communication Habits That Can Hurt Your Reputation at Work
Communication breakdowns are a common source of workplace tension. Often, it’s not what you say but how and when you say it that creates problems. These habits are especially known for causing conflict and regret:
- Responding while angry: Firing off a quick, emotional email may feel satisfying at the moment but it often leads to regret. Draft your response, save it, and revisit it later with a clear head.
- Copying higher-level leaders to make a point: Including your boss’s boss to gain leverage can backfire. It may be seen as undermining authority, which can damage your credibility.
- Going silent when a deadline slips: Missed deadlines happen but lack of communication makes it worse. A quick heads-up builds trust and keeps others informed.
- Saying “That’s not my job” too quickly: Even if it’s true, how you respond matters. A more collaborative approach leaves a better, lasting impression.
You don’t need major changes to communicate more effectively, just thoughtful awareness. Small improvements can go a long way in strengthening trust and creating a more positive work environment.
